CHAPTER 3: THE KINETIC DEBT

SYSTEM ARCHIVE NOTE: FRAGMENT 003_ALPHA

[SENSORY_INPUT: SEISMIC_RESONANCE]

The Warden-unit’s biometrics indicate Level 4 Trauma. Rib cage structural integrity: 68%. Respiratory efficiency: Decreasing. Logic-centers should be prioritizing 'Flight.'

However, the Vane-unit (Class: Master Mason) has entered the 10-meter combat radius. This was not predicted in Iteration 9,998. The probability of survival is shifting from 'Zero' to 'Marginal.' There is a kinetic debt to be paid for every inch of 'Ordered' ground claimed from this planet. The Warden is now preparing to settle the account.

END NOTE

The world was a blur of amber HUD-glitches and the copper-tang of my own blood.

The Stone-Eater turned its massive, slate-grey head toward the ruined grain-sled, vibrating with a low-frequency hum that shook the very marrow in my teeth. It was done with the food. It wanted the foundation stakes.

"Warden!"

Vane didn't run like a soldier; he moved like a man who knew the weight of every stone he’d ever laid. He held a heavy masonry-hammer in his right hand and a wedge of cold-forged iron in the other. He looked seventy years old until he swung.

"The quartz!" Vane roared, his voice cutting through the gride of the beast. "The secondary lattice in the knee! Hit the grain, Warden! Hit the grain of the stone!"

I saw it then. The Interface flared, highlighting a shimmering, translucent vein of silicate running through the beast’s left joint. A fault line. A flaw in the planet's armor.

Strike (+Iron)

Action Die: 5 + Iron 3 = 8
Challenge Dice: 2, 6

Result: STRONG HIT
Effect: Inflict +1 Harm (Total: 3 Harm). You retain initiative.

I didn't lead with my shoulder—I couldn't. I led with the stake. I drove the iron point into the quartz-vein with every ounce of momentum my failing ribs could muster. There was no sound of flesh tearing. Instead, it was the sound of a mountain cracking.

The beast’s leg shattered. A spray of algid mineral-shards flew into the air, slicing my cheek, but I didn't stop. Vane was already there, his hammer coming down on the wedge he’d jammed into the creature's core.

Clang. Clang. Clang.

The Stone-Eater let out a sound like a landslide in a cathedral. It didn't die; it ceased to be a whole. The internal kinetic energy holding the slate and quartz together simply... vanished. The entity collapsed into a pile of inert, jagged stone.

ENTITY NEUTRALIZED: STONE-EATER (APEX)

ANALYSIS: KINETIC DEBT SETTLED

REWARD: RAW SILICATE LATTICE IDENTIFIED

The entity's structural resonance has ceased. Material is now safe for reclamation.

I fell to my knees in the sloom, the mud soaking through my trousers. My breath came in ragged, burning gasps.

"You're a mess, boy," Vane muttered, wiping flint-dust from his brow. He looked at the pile of stones that had nearly ended us. Then he reached down and picked up a shard of the quartz I had shattered. It glowed with a faint, dying green light.

"Is it... dead?" Kaelen asked, stepping out from behind a leurid tree, his surveyor's light trembling.

"It’s sediment," I wheezed. I looked at the ruined grain, then at the quartz shard in Vane's hand. "Vane. Can we use that?"

The old man’s eyes narrowed. "It’s silicate. Harder than anything we brought from the Solaris. If we fuse this into the foundation pilings... the others might not be so quick to wake up when we build."

ASSET UNLOCKED: Scavenged Silicate

TYPE: RARE MATERIAL

EFFECT: Use to bolster defenses. Grant +1 on [Secure an Advantage] moves involving construction or fortification.

QUANTITY: 1 Unit (Large)

SYSTEM_LOG: WILL_VARIABLE_HYPOTHESIS

The Warden-unit has survived an encounter with a 92.4% fatality rating. Resourcefulness detected: The survivors are now scavenging the predator. This behavior is reminiscent of early human development cycles, but accelerated by the Interface.

The 'Will Variable' is infectious. The Vane-unit is now modifying the 'Founding Hearth' blueprints to incorporate the entity's remains. They are turning the planet's teeth into their shield.

GLOSSARY

Term Definition
Grain (Stone) The natural direction of the crystalline structure in a mineral entity.
Kinetic Debt The narrative concept that every act of building requires an equal act of survival.
Scavenged Silicate Rare, glowing mineral remains of a Stone-Eater; highly durable.
